built between 1951 and 1954, Saarlouis´ city hall embodies a positive example for the construction style of the 1950s. A particular architectural feature is its tower, which reaches 27 metres into the sky and has become the city´s landmark. A cycle of stone carvings on the building´s façade, created by a local sculptor by the name of Simon, depicts the tumultuous history of Saarlouis. Also noticeable: the city hall exterior is structured by a classical windows axis, the interior is marked by a sweeping staircase, 1950s style.

interior architecture:
administrative building, parts of which are under preservation order. Of particular interest is the Gobelin Room, which was particularly conceived for the exhibition of historic Gobelin tapestries. These precious wall-hangings, which were woven at the Aubusson Royal Tapestry Manufacture, were acquired in 1687 to beautify the municipal court, which at the time resided in Saarlouis. The Gobelin Room also houses 12 baroque armchairs, an antique table and a clock, which was a gift presented to the city in 1954 at the city hall inauguration ceremony. The tapestry was a present from former minister-president Johannes Hoffmann. The Gobelin Room is also being used as a wedding ceremony room for civil registry office weddings.

coming on the A620 Saarbrücken-Merzig, take the Wallerfangen exit and follow Wallerfanger Straße in the direction of Saarlouis. Turn left onto St. Nazairer Allee and follow the signposts indicating the city centre. Continue straight on Holzendorfer Straße and Deutsche Straße to the Großer Markt square.
