Saarlouis City Hall

pictures

description

brief description:

built between 1951 and 1954, Saarlouis´ city hall embodies a positive example for the construction style of the 1950s. A particular architectural feature is its tower, which reaches 27 metres into the sky and has become the city´s landmark. A cycle of stone carvings on the building´s façade, created by a local sculptor by the name of Simon, depicts the tumultuous history of Saarlouis. Also noticeable: the city hall exterior is structured by a classical windows axis, the interior is marked by a sweeping staircase, 1950s style.

The Gobelin Room also houses 12 baroque armchairs, an antique table and a clock, which was a gift presented to the city in 1954 at the city hall inauguration ceremony. The tapestry was a present from former minister-president Johannes Hoffmann. The Gobelin Room is also being used as a wedding ceremony room for civil registry office weddings.
