memorial site on the grounds of the former Thil concentration camp. The camp was put in place to house workers which were used as forced labour in a nearby iron mine. Up until the end of World War II, the mine served as a manufacturing facility for V1 rockets. The fact that such an underground production plant ever existed in the Lorraine region of France almost fell into oblivion as the camp site was torn down by the people of Thil, immediately following World War II. Later, however, a collection was taken up to build a crypt enclosing the former crematorium. It is only in the recent past that the municipality of Thil, together with an association promoting the remembrance and recognition of the concentration camp, has proposed a project to further keep the camp memory alive.
